What to Expect at Coast to Coast's Booth
Our collection spans children's literature, modern fiction, science fiction, mystery, film, music, and counterculture, with a particular interest in Pacific Northwest authors and stories.
Alongside beloved titles, you'll find pieces of cultural history that capture the artists, ideas, and moments that have left a lasting mark on readers and collectors alike.
For Coast to Coast Books proprietor Ben Gustin, collecting began with the stories and music that made an impression growing up. Childhood favorites like Redwall, Hatchet, and The Lord of the Rings helped spark a lifelong appreciation for books, while an interest in classic rock (inspired by his mother's days on tour as a percussionist for balafon and the Gratful Dead) opened the door to collecting concert posters, magazine features, and other music-related ephemera.
At Rare Books Boston, we'll be bringing together selections from these interests, with plenty to discover for anyone drawn to literary nostalgia, music history, or the thrill of finding something unexpected.
More Than Books: Exploring the Worlds Behind the Stories
We've found that some of the most interesting discoveries in collecting happen beyond the pages of a book.
A vintage magazine, an original illustration, or a piece of promotional artwork can offer a glimpse into how a story reached its audience and how its influence extended beyond the printed work.
That spirit of discovery inspired us to create three curated collections we'll be showcasing at the fair, featuring the works of Stephen King, Frank Herbert's Dune saga, and Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series.
The Stephen King and Frank Herbert collections are housed in custom-designed wood-and-glass display chests, created specifically to bring their contents together in a considered presentation. Our Douglas Adams collection offers another opportunity to explore the world surrounding a much-loved series through a thoughtfully assembled selection of related materials.
Each curated collection is presented as a complete offering, with individual pieces chosen for the connections they share. The result is an opportunity to appreciate these authors and their work from a broader perspective, bringing together literary history, visual culture, and the enduring appeal of the stories themselves.
